Columbia: Home of President James K. Polk

“Who is James K. Polk?” That’s what Polk’s Whig opponents said about him, trying to paint him as an unknown during the presidential campaign of 1844. It is true that he was considered a “dark horse” when he won the Democratic nomination for president in 1844, but he was definitely not an unknown! James K. Polk had served seven terms in Congress, including two terms as Speaker of the House, and then one term as Governor of Tennessee, before the Whigs swept him out of office in the early 1840s. He had been an important figure in state and national politics for years, but he was not considered a top contender for the presidential nomination. His allies actually hoped to see him nominated to run for Vice President, but when the convention fell into disarray, Polk’s name was floated as a compromise and he was finally nominated on the 9th ballot. It was here in his hometown of Columbia, TN, that he got the news that he had been nominated to run not for Vice President, but at the top of the ticket.
