2020 Reads
Last year after following some accounts of people who read and recommended certain books, I felt called to read more. I asked for a few books for Christmas, and I was super excited to start. I had the goal of reading 12 books (1 per month). It felt totally manageable, and I was ready.
I did okay for the first couple of months of the year, and then the pandemic started, and I lost my drive. The news consumed me more and more. Then, I had a medical emergency, and it really knocked the wind out of my sails.
But somewhere around the fall (maybe it had to do with the cooler temps), I started to regain my sense of wanting to read more. So, I was able to complete my challenge, and then surpass it by 16 books.
Here's my list of books for 2020:
- I’m Still Here
- Be the Bridge
- Two Lives of Lydia Bird
- One Day in December
- Where the Crawdads Sing
- Little Fires Everywhere
- The Giver of Stars
- Becoming
- The Road Back to You
- The Guest List
- The Vanishing Half
- The Great Alone
- Homegoing
- Home by Julie Andrews
- Anxious People
- Mexican Gothic
- Beach Read
- The Montessori Toddler
- Where You’d Go Bernadette
- Anne of Green Gables
- Such a Fun Age
- Match Making for Beginners
- This Time Next Year
- The Unhoneymooners
- The Dutch House
- In a Holidaze
- Twelve Dates of Christmas
- The Tourist Trap
I would say that my top 5 books of the year would have to be Homegoing, Beach Read, Becoming, Be the Bridge, and Anxious People. I loved most of the books that I read though, so it would be hard to narrow it down any further.
I was talking to a friend yesterday about reading when I was in school, and I honestly didn't enjoy being forced to read something. I get why we do it as part of our education, but I also see the value in allowing students to read what they would like. It makes you crave the next story and characters to become friends with. I never would have thought I would rekindle my love for reading last year, but I'm so thankful I did.
I even started a book club through Needle and Grain to help connect others who love reading! We meet once a month via Zoom, and it's one of my very favorite things. We have read 3 books together so far, and it is so fun to have a community to chat about books with!
For 2021, my goal is 32 books. I'll be 32 in March, so it seemed fitting! I've already read 2, but I am having a hard time narrowing down what I want to read. I love using the Book of the Month Club to get new reads, and it's only $14.99/month. The option to add on books really sealed the deal for me, and now B and I both can snag some books from our to-be-read lists! Find out more info here! If you use my link, you'll get your first month for only $5!
If you want to purchase from my books, here's my Amazon link!! But I'd love for you to support local bookstores, or bookshop.org!
What are some of your favorite reads of 2020? What should I add to my list for this year?
