Columbia: Dimple of the Universe
The phrase “Dimple of the Universe” was coined by writer John Trotwood Moore in the early 1900s in reference to Middle Tennessee, and it was quickly adopted by the people of Columbia. It’s easy to see why they thought the nickname fit. Known for rich soil that lent itself to booming agriculture and livestock raising (see our Mule Day candle for more on that), Columbia really did seem like the center of the dimple that was the Nashville Basin. With its deep appreciation of history, rich natural resources centered around the Duck River, and vibrant small business community, we like to think that the old nickname still fits!
